Amateurs prep for 2017 Buckeye

This year’s Little Buckeye and Buckeye Classic was held at the World Equestrian Center in Wilmington for the first time and saw a sizable increase over last year, making it the largest event yet for both OAQHA and BWHA. In addition to the new facility, much of the growth can be attributed to the full slate of Level 1, 2 and 3 classes along with Rookie Highpoint and New AQHA Exhibitor Saddle giveaways. $100,000 in free entries and prizes didn’t hurt either, something unique to the Buckeye. Some 15 first time exhibitors attended the show who were all in their first year showing AQHA, which made OAQHA and BWHA very proud. Participants were treated to true Buckeye hospitality that has become synonymous with the show; over 4 pallets of ice cold water, 100 dozen buckeye candies and 800 Buckeye Classic ice cream sandwiches were handed out for free throughout the 10 day event. Points were in full supply as well with many classes exceeding 45 entries and awarding 9 points per judge several times during the circuit. The Category 1 NSBA Futurity saw the addition of the limited division to each of the classes and awarded trophies, neck ribbons and $15,000 in prize money. The highlight of the show continued to be the leadline class where the next generation took center stage and every entry won a giant Melissa & Doug kangaroo courtesy of the Roberts Family. Additionally, $2,000 was raised at the circuit from the sale of Buckeye merchandise to benefit the Ohio Quarter Horse Foundation. The volunteers of OAQHA and BWHA have already started planning for next year’s Buckeye and have set-up a page for feedback on their website.
