OQHYA NYATT Team Criteria

The National Youth Activity Team Tournament (NYATT) is the most popular youth event at the All American Quarter Horse Congress. Although the competition is not approved by AQHA, it still brings together more than 100 teams and 600 youth from state and regional Quarter Horse associations across the country.

Each state and regional Quarter Horse association is responsible for gathering their own team. Associations must have a minimum of four team members to participate in the contest, with no more than two members competing in each of the NYATT classes. The classes that are part of the NYATT include Barrel Racing, Western Horsemanship, Hunter Under Saddle, Reining, Showmanship and Western Pleasure.

Despite the lack of AQHA awards, contestants do not go home empty handed. Medallions are awarded to the top 10 individuals in each class, with class winners receiving the coveted Don Bell All American bronze trophy. In addition, all members of the top six teams overall receive Don Bell All American trophies. To determine team standings, points are awarded for each individual’s efforts in every class, with first place receiving 10 points, second place receiving nine, and so on.

OQHYA NYATT Requirements

All OQHYA members are invited to compete for a spot on OQHA’s NYATT Team. In order to be eligible, youth must be a member of OQHYA, reside in Ohio, participate and meet current year fundraiser requirements, as well as attend at least two OQHYA meetings between January 1, 2013 and July 1, 2013.

Youth must also place at a minimum of three shows, accumulating at least 10 points during the qualifying period. Points will be awarded on the basis of one point for each horse the exhibitor defeats plus one point for the exhibitor up to nine places. There will be 30 points maximum awarded for each class per judge. A youth’s 10 best shows during the qualifying period will count. The NYATT qualifying period begins on the Saturday of the SOQHA Winter Circuit in March and runs through July 31, 2013 (inclusive). Participating youth members may only show in one event in the National Youth Activity Team Tournament.

Please note that several regional Quarter Horse associations also sponsor NYATT teams. Make sure to check with your regional affiliate for team requirements!
