Congress Queen!

Shelly

The writing was on the wall for the Pennsylvania Quarter Horse Association Queen candidate Shelly Campbell when she showed up for Queens’ Horsemanship on a gelding named Easy To Be First. “I guess that is a pretty good coincidence,” Shelly laughed after her crowning as the All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen.

Shelly, 23, has been showing since she was nine years old, but her horse, Incredible Corey, was injured this summer. Luckily for Shelly, Madison Eichstadt was more than happy to allow Shelly to show her horse, Easy To Be First. After Madison tackled Shelly to give her a hug, Shelly explained that Madison and her sister, Lauren, and mom, Tammy, are more like family than friends.

The new All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen was thrilled with her crowning on Monday night. “I’ve never competed in the Queen contest before, or any pageants. My first competition like this was our state competition in Pennsylvania,” Shelly exclaimed.

Although she did not have any previous pageant experience, Shelly had planned for the Queen contest for a long time. “I’ve wanted to run for five years,” Shelly said. “My friend, Becky, was crowned in 1998, and that planted the seed in my mind.”

Shelly had too many commitments with her education, however, to compete before this year. “I am in my last year of pharmacy school this year and am on rotations, so I made sure that I had my time off planned so that I could come the Congress.”

Luckily for Shelly, she got her schedule worked out this year and was able to compete. After many tears and lots of smiles and hugs, Shelly’s friends and family carried her through the rain for her first night as the 2007 All American Quarter Horse Congress Queen.
