2012 Congress Schedule Update

The Ohio Quarter Horse Association Board of Directors met Monday, March 19th and discussed several changes and possible additions to the 2012 All American Quarter Horse Congress schedule.

Two new NRHA classes were added: 6660 NRHA Prime-Time Non-Pro Reining, which will be held on Wednesday, October 10th and 6665 NRHA Prime-Time Open Reining, held Thursday, October 11th. These classes will run concurrently with existing NRHA Non-Pro Reining and NRHA Open Reining, respectively.

Three Reining classes were also moved: Both sections of NRHA Youth Reining were moved from Friday, October 12th to Tuesday, October 9th. Class 2340 AQHA Amateur Reining was moved from Tuesday, October 9th to Friday, October 12th.

Finally, the Congress Tri-Chairmen discussed the potential to add Cowboy Mounted Shooting to the 2012 Congress schedule. While the classes have not yet been officially added, and many details remain to be worked out, Congress officials are excited about the possibility.

“Cowboy Mounted Shooting has gained so much popularity in the last few years and we are excited about the possibility of showcasing this event at the All American Quarter Horse Congress,” said Scott Myers, OQHA President. “We are still in the process of working out details, and we will have more information in the near future.”

Details regarding the possible Cowboy Mounted Shooting classes at Congress will be forthcoming.

The new reining schedule changes still does not help the exhibitors and their futurity horses. The ropings and cattle chutes does not allow the futurity horses ample time or decent ground to get worked on. After talking to many breed associations that hold ropings, they have all agreed that the footing for reiners is very bad after ropings have been run on the ground first. It didnt matter how much work the ground needed, it waqs never any good. I did enter my futurity horse but he will not be showing there unless changes are made. I hope you dont mind losing entries and exhibitors that have been coming for years. Spectators would still be able to watch ropings if the schedule was to be changed back to where it was last year.
There is ample time left to change it. Thank You, Julie

Why is there not a working cow horse class? working cow horse has been around a lot longer than mounted shooting. It seems that would be a much easier class to add since you already have the cows there for the cutting and most reiners do cow horse, you could do the class right before the cows leave? Seems like this class would be in much more demand and would make more money than a lot of loud guns with pleasure horses around?

Why can't the schedule reflect ALL vendors opening the day the reiners and cutters BEGIN showing?? VERSES a week later ... As an exhibitor, I find it disrespectful and annoying that we (I am a cutter) cannot enjoy the same shopping enjoyment, as well as my family and friends that come to watch the cutting and reining events... BOTH of the sports ARE TOP national sports, yet treated as the the dirt of the "Congress".

It is too bad that you have moved the roping to the first weekend, I believe you will loose entries and as others have noted it will not help the ground is the schedule set or is there consideration for change?

It is getting very difficult to take kids out of high school for the week required to show in the Nov youth classes. It would be wonderful if the kids could get these classes done in 3-4days and not over 6. Thanks for considering this change.

I would also sooner see cowhorse at the Congress. We need a premier show on the east coast to show at. All the main events are on th west coast. Cow horse is strong and thriving on the east coast and would be a great addition. All the work is pretty much done with the cattle pens up and cattle there. We drive alot further to go to smaller shows.

I agree with Kim. It is getting very difficult to take kids out of high school for the week required to show in the Nov youth classes. It would be wonderful if the kids could get these classes done in 3-4days and not over 6. Thanks for considering this change.

I really wish the OQHA would consider adding Working Cow Horse in the near future. There are several new NRCHA affiliates in this part of the country including Ohio, PA, and NY. I'm sure there would be plenty of entries, and Working Cow Horse is one of the most exciting spectator events in the horse show industry. Thank you for your consideration.

What about adding a flag race? Flag racing is a great crowd pleaser, it is quick to run and does not take long to set up and take down. It is fast and easy to run with all the contesting events usually the last weekend. I would suggest there be some added money for the competitive flag racer to come but I am sure it would not be hard to find sponsors, because of the competitive flag racers would help out and would love to see the class grow. There are some great American Quarter Horse's that love to run flags, you can see it in their blood, it would be a great class to add to this great Quarter Horse show.
